One Day International Seminar organised by the Department of Economics dated 28-03-2026 at GNC, Sirsa.

The Department of Economics at Government National College, Sirsa, successfully organized an international seminar on the theme "Trade, Development, and Environment: Emerging Challenges and Opportunities," under the aegis of the Department of Higher Education. The program commenced with the ceremonial lighting of the lamp and an invocation to Goddess Saraswati, followed by the rendition of the college anthem. In his welcome address, the College Principal, Dr. Shatrujeet, extended a warm welcome to all guests and participants, stating that such seminars play a pivotal role in the holistic development of students and provide a robust platform for academic discourse on emerging themes. The proceedings of the program were anchored by Dr. Meet. In her address, she expressed concern over the neglect of the environment amidst the pursuit of development and raised the pertinent question of how the policymaking process for sustainable development can be insulated from political influence. Subsequently, Dr. Rajdeep introduced the keynote speaker, Prof. Manoj Siwach introduced Chaudhary Devi Lal University, Sirsa. Prof. Siwach delivered his keynote address on the theme, "Growth and Stability in a Changing Global Economy: Emerging Challenges and Opportunities." He stated that the central question regarding development today is: "Can growth remain sustainable amidst rising contradictions?" Dividing his lecture into three parts—Global Perspective, Analytical Core, and Synthesis—he presented a detailed analysis of economic, technological, trade-related, and ecological changes. Furthermore, he highlighted key contradictions such as growth versus inequality, technology versus employment, and expansion versus ecology. Following the tea break, a plenary session was held, during which Prof. Balwinder Singh Tiwana, a retired professor from Punjabi University, Patiala, delivered the keynote address. Dr. Indra Jakhar introduced him to the audience. In his address, Prof. Tiwana remarked that the global competition among various nations for control over natural resources underscores the pivotal role these resources play in sustainable development. He presented a comprehensive analysis covering the process by which the US dollar became established as the international currency within the global economy, the formation of BRICS, the concept of de-dollarization, the current geopolitical landscape, and the role of power dynamics in controlling natural resources. Subsequently, from 12:30 PM to 2:30 PM, four parallel technical sessions were conducted—three held in-person (offline) and one via an online medium. The online session was moderated by Dr. Amandeep. One of the technical sessions was chaired by Dr. Prem Chand Kamboj (Retired Principal), who presented a research paper titled "Skill Imbalance in Developing Economies: A Study in the Context of India." In his presentation, he observed that skill mismatch remains a formidable challenge in developing nations, particularly in India. During the same session, Prof. Surendra Kumar presented a research paper titled "The 'Care Economy' as a Driver of Female Labor Force Participation: An Economic and Policy Analysis." He argued that the 'care economy' serves as a primary driver of inclusive growth and that unpaid... Reducing the burden of caregiving responsibilities plays a supportive role in enhancing women's labor force participation. Another technical session was chaired by Dr. Vikramjit Singh (Government College for Women, Sirsa). A separate technical session was presided over by the college Principal, Dr. Shatrujit Singh. During this seminar, more than 85 delegates from both within the country and abroad presented their research papers on various topics. Following the lunch break, a special guest speaker session was organized via Google Meet, during which Dr. Pritam Singh, Professor Emeritus at Oxford Brookes University (UK), shared his insights. Dr. Satya Pal introduced him to the audience. Dr. Singh analyzed the journey of development and sustainability within global, Indian, and—specifically—the Punjabi contexts. In response to a question posed by Dr. Amandeep, he stated that educators can play a pivotal role, through their own conduct, in fostering awareness and a sense of responsibility regarding sustainability within society. Dr. Amandeep expressed her gratitude to him for his lecture. Prof. Abhay Singh Godara attended the valedictory session as the keynote speaker; he was introduced by the seminar convener, Prof. Surendra Kumar. Prof. Godara remarked that the seminar's theme holds immense relevance in the contemporary context, and he shed light on the challenges related to sustainability within the agricultural sector.
